Eufaula is a city in Barbour County Alabama, situated along the Chattahoochee River.
The land was originally occupied by three Creek Indian tribes of the Muscogee Nation. When several families from Georgia made a permanent settlement on the high bluffs of the area in 1823, they decided to name their new home after the most dominate of the three tribes, the Eufaulas (pronounced you-fall-uhs).
Eufaula contains over 700 historic and architecturally significant structures in the Seth Lore and Irwinton Historic District. The most coherent collection of mid-to-late 19th century small town commercial buildings as well as an impressive collection of domestic Italianate architecture resides here. The Eufaula First United Methodist Church and the First Baptist Church of Eufaula are amongst the oldest. A noteworthy building is The Shorter Mansion. This museum honours the six Alabama governors from Barbour County. Built in 1884 by Eli Shorter it is recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Eufaula is approximately 90 miles southeast of Montgomery, the state capital which helps make it a popular tourist location. 640 miles of shore line, beautiful Lake Eufaula and over 45,000 acres of land offer tourists a plethora of recreational activities, from boating and sailing to skiing and camping.
