The city of Gadsden is in Etowah County, in north-eastern Alabama. It is only 60 miles northeast of Birmingham and sits as the principal city of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area. Situated in the foothills of the Appalachians, Gadsden offers beautiful scenery and outdoor activities amongst the splendour of its mountains, lakes, Coosa River and Noccalula Falls. Gadsden has a humid subtropical climate and experiences hot humid summers and mild winters.

Historically Gadsden was a shipping centre popular for riverboats. It was the States second most important industrial centre until the devastating downward turn in the 1980’s. After this crash the city worked to redefined itself and created such attractions as the Cultural Arts Centre and downtown redevelopment area. This led to the 2000 City Livability Awards Program awarding them first place and the honoured title of All-America City by the National Civic League. These recognise the way that Gadsden's citizens, government, businesses, and voluntary organizations worked together to address critical local issues.
