Sylacauga is a city in Talladega County, Alabama. It is situated between the two major cities Montgomery and Birmingham. Sylacauga is a diverse town with a strong business and industry base. It is proud of its state of the art medical services, outstanding schools, library and recreational opportunities.
The city is probably most known for having a large deposit of the world's whitest marble. This has been quarried successfully here for over 100 years. Sylacauga marble can be found in both the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. In the rotunda of the United States Capitol, a bust of Lincoln sculpted in Sylacauga marble by the creator of Mount Rushmore, Mr Gutzon Borglum, is on display.
Sylacauga is the site of the first documented case of an object from outer space hitting a person. On November 30, 1954, a 4 kg piece of what became known as the Hodges Meteorite crashed through the roof of an Oak Grove house, bounced off a radio, and badly bruised Mrs. Ann Hodges, who was taking an afternoon nap.
Sylacauga is also home to Gravity hill. A Gravity hill is a place where the layout of the surrounding land produces the optical illusion that a very slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope. Several of these hills exist around the world attracting tourists to witness this unusual sight. If you left car left out of gear it would appear to be rolling uphill.
