Fairbanks is a Home Rule City in and the borough seat of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska. It straddles the Chena River located centrally in the Tanana Valley. To its north are the White Mountains and the Yukon River and to the south lies the Tanana River.
Although Fairbanks is the largest city in the Interior region of Alaska, it retains its "frontier" feel and services many of the smaller villages scattered throughout the surrounding wilderness, including the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks is the oldest college in Alaska. It opened as The Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines in 1922 and grew rapidly until in 1935 becoming the University of Alaska. Today it remains the only campus in the state that awards doctoral degrees and is one of the few Land, Sea and Space Grant universities in the country. The modern campus provides up to date technology, education and facilities within the picturesque scenery that offers students skiing, running trails, oral histories and the arctic discoveries of generations of students who came before them.
As well as a reference to the discovery of gold in 1902, Fairbanks is called "The Golden Heart of Alaska," because of its central location and the warm friendly character of its people.
