Ketchikan is a city in Ketchikan Gateway Borough in Alaska. It is located on Revillagigedo Island in the Alexander Archipelago in the south-eastern region of Alaska. The largest neighbouring city is Juneau, just 235 miles south. The name Ketchikan comes from the Tlingit name for the creek that runs through the city. The original meaning of the word is lost, however there are two translations that are commonly referred to. One is "the river belonging to Kitschk" and the other means "Thundering Wings of an Eagle. “

The ocean surrounding Ketchikan is unspoiled and provides some of the finest King and Silver salmon fishing in the world. Known as the "Salmon Capital of the World", the economy of this city lies heavily upon the local fisheries.

The Misty Fjords National Monument is a protected area in extreme south-eastern Alaska covering 2,294,343 acres. Almost all of this land is designated wilderness and is administered by the United States Forest Service. This is one of the area's major attractions for tourists.

The world's largest collection of standing totem poles is located at three major locations within Ketchikan: Saxman Village, Totem Bight, and the Totem Heritage Centre. The city works to preserve these stunning 19th century totem poles that were retrieved from uninhabited Tlingit and Haida village sites near Ketchikan.
