Kodiak is one of 6 communities and the main city on Kodiak Island in Alaska.

Kodiak became a commercial fishing centre in 1867 when the United States purchased Alaska and remains as such to this day. Tourism is a lesser but still valuable economic influence. Attractions here include outdoor adventures, salmon and halibut fishing and hunting of the unique Kodiak bear, elk, Sitka Deer, and mountain goats.

Kodiak, being an island, satisfies all it transportation needs both private and commercial between the entire island and the outside world via ferryboat or airline. It has been home to native cultures for over 7000 years and the descendants that still occupy the island are considered Alutiiq. This term is used to describe both their language and culture.

The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce organises the Kodiak Crab Festival which takes place every Memorial Day weekend. Along with feasting on seafood, locals celebrate with carnival rides, game booths, art exhibitions and group activities. Also popular are a kayak race, a marathon, an ultra-marathon and a 9.2-mile mountain run called the Pillar Mountain Run. Other annual events are held attracting tourists, people from the island and surrounding areas throughout the year.
