Kodiak is one of 6 communities and the main city on Kodiak Island in Alaska.

Kodiak became a commercial fishing centre in 1867 when the United States purchased Alaska and remains as such to this day. Tourism is a lesser but still valuable economic influence. Attractions here include outdoor adventures, salmon and halibut fishing and hunting of the unique Kodiak bear, elk, Sitka Deer, and mountain goats.

Along with feasting on seafood, locals celebrate with carnival rides, game booths, art exhibitions and group activities. Also popular are a kayak race, a marathon, an ultra-marathon and a 9.2-mile mountain run called the Pillar Mountain Run. Other annual events are held attracting tourists, people from the island and surrounding areas throughout the year.
