Petersburg is a city in the Petersburg Census Area of Alaska. It is located on the north end of Mitkof Island, where Frederick Sound meets the Wrangell Narrows, halfway between Juneau and Ketchikan. The native Tlingit name is Gántiyaakw Séedi which means “Steamboat Canyon”.

There are a wide range of attractions and activities on offer in Petersburg catering to lovers of the outdoors, wildlife enthusiasts and history admirers. Three bodies of water, the Frederick Sound, Stephens Passage and Chatham Strait, meet 30 miles north of Petersburg creating a perfect habitat for humpback whales. Fishing adventures focus around king and silver salmon, and pacific halibut that can grow as big as a barn door! Millions of king salmon fry each year are released into the Crystal Lake Hatchery. Eagles and waterfowl can be viewed roosting in trees and frolicking by the beachside at Petersburg’s Eagle Roost Park. The historic Five Finger Light House and the magical Brothers Islands are available most days to explore.

Festivals here include Julebukking on Christmas Eve, where according to Norwegian tradition, local merchants offer customers food and spirits in appreciation for their business that year. The Salmon Derby held on Memorial Day Weekend lasts for four days and offers prize money of up to $30,000 for King Salmon fishing. Little Norway Festival honours Norwegian Independence Day on May 17th and is one of the largest Petersburg events each year. Craft booths, parades, a Scandinavian pageant, costume show and Kaffe Hus accompany festive food and music.

Petersburg pleases all with it plethora of pleasures from flight seeing to birding, whale watching to hiking. A small fishing village attitude coupled with hardworking friendly locals makes Petersburg a wonderful city to live in or visit.
