Seward is a city in Kenai Peninsula Borough in Alaska. It is located at the head of Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula and is known as the 'Gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park'. In 1867 William H. Seward negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia. At that time Seward was United States Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. The City then took his name.
The opportunities for outdoor exploration and adventure surround Seward. Boat cruises stop at remote islands and navigate their way through the natural habitats of spectacular wildlife. Sea life within Kenai Fjords National Park includes Steller sea lions, Dall's porpoise, harbor porpoise, harbor seals, bald eagles, puffins and marine birds, Orca and Humpback whale watching. Glacier Cruises take you up close to these magnificent natural attractions or you can take a bird’s eye view from a helicopter. Guided glacier tours allow you to ice climb and ice hike directly on the surface of Glaciers or you can spend your days kayaking and sailing around them. Sport fishing here revolves around Salmon, Halibut, Ling cod and Salmon Shark, or if you prefer to keep your feet dry, Seward boasts world class mountain bike trails.
One of the nation’s oldest and toughest mountain runs, The Mount Marathon Race, is held in beautiful Seward each year. Hundred of enthusiasts gather to conquer the race that includes running across loose rock, jagged terrain and climbing up to heights of 921ft above sea level.
