Sitka is a city and borough in Alaska. It is located on the west side of Baranof Island in the Alexander Archipelago. It was named from the Tlingit name Shee At'iká which means People on the Outside of Shee. (Shee being the Tlingit name for Baranof Island). Transportation is both expensive and inconvenient due to the location and weather of Sitka, however, Sitka remains the 6th largest port by value of seafood harvest in the United States.
It was in Sitka on October 18, 1867, that Alaska was sold to the United States of America by Russia.
The Russian Flag was replaced by the stars and stripes of the USA in a formal ceremony signifying the transfer of the territory. The price of the land averaged at 2 cents per acre.
Backpacking day trips are a popular attraction and range from the tourist abilities through to the experienced backpackers with experienced guides. Kayaking day excursions are available and locally run and destinations include Baranof Island, Goddard hot springs, Baranof Warm Springs, White Sulphur Hot Springs, Port Alexander, Port Armstrong and Port Walter.
Sitka's power is generated by dams at the spectacular Blue Lake and Green Lake. There is a limited access to Blue Lake mostly allowing residents to kayak. The Green Lake is fed by Vodopad River and outflows into Silver Bay serving as home to several operational pens of chum salmon.
