Wasilla is a city in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska. It is located in south-central Alaska on the northern point of Cook Inlet in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. It is the fourth largest city in the state and is named after Chief Wasilla, a local Dena'ina chief.
Alaska's North Slope oilfields and the neighbouring city of Anchorage transformed Wasilla in the 1970s from having an entrepreneurial economic base of small-scale agriculture and recreation, to becoming an accommodation and lifestyle support for businesses and their employees. The George Parks Highway turned the town into a commuter suburb of Anchorage.
Sarah Palin served as Wasilla's mayor before her election as Governor of Alaska. In 2008 she was chosen by John McCain as his vice-presidential running mate in the United States presidential election. Overnight Wasilla received international attention.
Education and entertainment can be found at The Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry in Wasilla. The museum, established in 1967, displays beautifully preserved transportation and industrial remnants that allowed the exploration and growth of Alaska. Collections include trains, tractors, communication equipment, steam mining drills and light aircraft. Events are hosted throughout the year celebrating local arts and crafts, the surrounding community and local music.
