Whittier is a city in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area in Alaska. It is located on the northeast shore of the Kenai Peninsula, at the head of Passage Canal. The city is a port for the Alaska Marine Highway and is 75miles southeast of Anchorage.
Whittier is accessible through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel which links the Highway south of Anchorage to with the isolated community of Whittier through Maynard Mountain. It is the second longest highway tunnel and longest combined rail and highway tunnel in North America and is known by locals as the Whittier or Portage tunnel. It is part of the Portage Glacier Highway and sits at 13,300 feet above sea level.
Whittier has a large abandoned government building that is used as a local hang out for kids and is often explored by tourists. The Buckner Building cannot be demolished due to asbestos contained within its structure as well as demolition debris could only be moved on via shipping or the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, thus making cost effective removable impossible. With at least one inch of water flooding the floors on each level, dangling wires and pipes, questionable structural integrity and the fact that bears are often found inside the building in the spring, it is not a recommendable tourist attraction, yet it does seem to be the most talked about building in Whittier.
