Chandler is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. It is located in central Arizona and is a prominent suburb of the Phoenix, Arizona Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is named after Dr. Alexander John Chandler who settled on a ranch south of Mesa in 1891. Originally the first veterinary surgeon in Arizona Territory, Chandler developed the area into what he called Chandler Ranch. The town office and Chandler High School opened in 1912 and by the following year the first golf resort in the state had opened as well, the luxurious Hotel San Marcos.

Chandler today is considered somewhat of a bedroom community for the greater Phoenix metropolitan with many of its residents commuting daily of the city for work. This is in spite of the fact that numerous established manufacturing plants for communications and computing firms such a Microchip, Motorola and Intel are here.

Chandler loves its festivals, with the greatest being the Ostrich Festival held in March. Chandler pays respect to the ostrich farms that were popular in the area in 1920’s. Located at Tumbleweed Park, the celebrations brings locals and tourists together to race Ostrich’s, watch parades, enjoy festive food, and buy and participate in local arts and crafts. An annual Jazz Festival is held in downtown Chandler and features a variety of renowned jazz performers.

Shopping is plentiful and varied along the South Arizona Avenue Corridor. This is the area created along the Price and Santan highways. Three shopping malls and a 1,300,000-square-foot Chandler Fashion Center provide spectacular range of retail outlets, and a large consumer population is drawn to the Wal-Mart situated at the southern end of the Corridor.
