Flagstaff is the county seat of Coconino County, Arizona. It is situated in Northern Arizona on Route 66, which runs roughly east-west across the state. Flagstaff was named after a Ponderosa Pine flagpole made by a scouting party from Boston to celebrate the United States Centennial on July 4, 1876.

Lowell Observatory and the United States Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station are two major astronomical observatories in Flagstaff. The city council has worked on preserving their dark skies since the 1950’s and in 2001 was recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association as the world's first "International Dark-Sky City."

Festivals are plentiful throughout the year. The Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival is held every spring whilst the Hopi and Navajo Festivals of Arts and Crafts, the Arizona Highland Celtic Festival, Pride in the Pines, and the Made in the Shade Beer Tasting Festival cover the summer months. April brings the Northern Arizona Book Festival where nationally known authors gather to read and display their works.
