Fort Mohave is in Mohave County, Arizona. It is located in the northwestern corner of the state below Bullhead City and next to where the Arizona, Nevada and California state lines meet. It sits on the Colorado River near the head of the Mohave Valley and was originally named Camp Colorado. Established in 1859 by Lt. Colonel William Hoffman during The Mojave Expedition, the Fort provided protection for emigrants to California through Northern Arizona on the Beale Wagon and Mojave Roads. It was renamed Fort Mojave in 1859 by Captain Lewis A. Armistead and is now part of the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation.
Mohave County contains parts of Grand Canyon National Park and Lake Mead National Recreation Area and all of the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. The Kaibab, Fort Mojave and Hualapai Indian Reservations also lie within the county.
The Colorado River runs east to west through Mohave County and divides the land into two distinctively different geographic regions. The Mohave Desert is in the south whilst the Arizona Strip is in the north.
