Fountain Hills is a town in Maricopa County, Arizona. It is located just south of central Arizona and is neighbored by Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the city of Scottsdale.
It currently has the world's fourth tallest fountain which was built in 1970 by Robert P. McCulloch. Once completed it was the world’s tallest fountain, a title that it held for over a decade. The fountain sprays water for about 15 minutes every hour between 9am and 9pm. The plume rises from a concrete water-lily sculpture in the center of a large man-made lake. The fountain is driven by three 600 horsepower turbine pumps and sprays water at a rate of 7000 gallons per minute through an 18-inch nozzle. Under normal situations only two pumps are operational creating a fountain about 300 feet high. Under ideal conditions however, and with all three pumps operating, the fountain reaches heights of up to 560 feet. Once a year, on St Patrick’s Day, the fountain is dyed bright green in celebration.
Two fairs are held each year in Fountain Hills, a local art fair and the Fountain Hills Great Fair, which incorporates arts and a carnival. The highlights include nearly 500 artists and artisans from around the country lining the shaded Avenue of the Fountains Boulevard, and Hot Air Balloon Rally. The town has the only Thanksgiving Day parade west of the Mississippi River.
Charles W. Juels' Fountain Hills Observatory is nearby.
