Gilbert is a city in Maricopa County in Arizona. It is located in the southeast part of the Greater Phoenix area. It is neighbored by other large cities such as Chandler, Mesa and Phoenix. The area around and including Gilbert is referred to as East Valley.

At the turn of the twentieth century William "Bobby" Gilbert created a rail line between Phoenix and Florence. The land that this passed through started as a small agricultural community and became known as the "Hay Capital of the World" until the late 1920s at which point it became officially incorporated. Between 1990 and 2005 Gilbert experienced a growth rate of nearly 500%, making it not only a family oriented affluent city, but one of the fastest growing cities in America.

A major tourist attraction in Gilbert is The Riparian Preserve. Here you can view over 200 species of birds throughout the year. There are 4.5 miles of walking trails, and fishing at the recreation lake at Water Ranch. This unique area was designed to utilize recycled water to create community wetland wildlife sanctuaries for recreation, education, and research. Educational programs are available to the public through the Riparian Institute covering birds, walks, children’s camps and observatory viewings.

An outdoor shopping experience can be enjoyed at San Tan Village. More than one hundred stores salons, restaurants, movies and more spread across this shopper’s paradise. A 14-screen megaplex theater, retail shops and restaurants can also be found at Gilbert Town Square.

At the Southeast Regional Library you can find not only books, videos, CDs and access to the web, but also enjoy the spectacular views of the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch from this lovely 127-acre site.
