Maricopa is a city in Pinal County, Arizona. It is located thirty miles south of Phoenix in the Gila River Valley. It is a short drive from large cities such as Chandler, Tempe, Phoenix and Glendale all in the central south part of the state. Maricopa is not within the Maricopa County but in its neighboring Pinal County.

Historically Maricopa was an important relay station along the famous Butterfield Overland Mail Route. During the 1800s people would come to the Maricopa area for the reliable source of water and abundance of food. The Pima and Maricopa farmers who lived and farmed nearby were peaceful and generous and became a vital factor in the progress and development of the southwest. During the 1870s, good roads led people through Maricopa whether they were travelling east-west or north. It was a prosperous period of time for their trading centers and was looked upon as a desert sanctuary for those thousands of travelers who depended upon its resources for their survival.

Maricopaville, just three miles west of present day Maricopa, sprung into life in 1879 when the Southern Pacific Railroad built a railroad line from Yuma to Tucson, and a second railroad line from Maricopaville to Phoenix. The area grew quickly adding hotels, saloons, warehouses, restaurants, theaters to their existing community.

Little remains of the town it once was, today you will find Maricopa to be a modern hub of activity. It has the largest regional park system in the country spreading across over 110,000 acres. Camping facilities, boating, fishing, hiking, swimming and almost every other form of outdoor recreation can be had at these spectacular sites.
