Mesa is a city in Maricopa County in Arizona. It is located east of Phoenix and north of Chandler in the south central part of the state. It is the third largest city in Arizona and the 37th largest in the United States. Mesa is part of the Greater Phoenix urban complex and one of the country’s fastest growing cities.
Mesa was originally founded by Mormon pioneers in 1878 and its population still reflects this. Churches and Temples are scattered throughout the city. The Mesa Arizona Temple is one of the oldest “Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint” temples in Mesa and the Mesa Mormon Temple is the third largest Mormon temple outside of Salt Lake City. This unique building is an amazing sight at night.
Attractions in Mesa are diverse and plentiful. For history buffs there is the Mesa Historical Museum and the Arizona Museum of Natural History and for families the Arizona Museum for Youth educates and inspires children aged 1-12.
The Commemorative Air Force Museum preserves the war planes that dominated the skies of World War II. The Confederate Air Force Museum at Falcon Field is home to the authentically restored World War II B-17 bomber, "Sentimental Journey." Only 13 of these planes were left flyable after the war and approximately eight are flying today in the United States. The CAF Museum also maintains a B-25 Mitchell bomber, SNJ, C-45, and a Grumman Guardian.
Arts and Festivities are celebrated throughout the year in and around Mesa. Arizona Renaissance Festival is held each February where jousting, juggling, music and mayhem happen. The Mesa Arts Center contains theatres, art galleries, and contemporary public art spaces. This uniquely designed building is the largest arts center in Arizona.
