Oro Valley is a suburban town in Pima County, Arizona. It is located 6 miles north of Tucson in the south east part of the state. The city is unique in that the Cañada del Oro riverbed bisects the area. The eastern banks of the river rise dramatically to the Santa Catalina Mountains where the western banks rise gradually to a plateau and further north to the Tortolita Mountains. The Tucson Mountains are to the south west.
Oro Valley is one of the Southwest's most affluent communities. It has an expanding public parks system, notable outdoor amenities, upscale retailing ventures, and one of the statistically highest performing public school systems in Arizona. Country clubs, resorts and golf courses highlight the decadence of Oro Valley living and cater to the desires of many residents that elsewhere in the United States but retain second or winter homes in the town. Traditionally the economy of Oro Valley has relied heavily upon its resort industry, but more recently the town is becoming a regional center for the biotech industry. This is resulting in an increasing number of permanent residents and a more diverse economy base. Innovation Park is home to medical and biotech campuses.
Outdoor activities can be found at every turn, whether it is hiking and camping in West Lambert Lane Park in Cañada Hills or playing tennis, basketball or riding horses at the Cañada del Oro Riverfront Park. The oldest park, James D. Kriegh Park, offers recreational fields, racquetball courts and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Breakers Water Park is just over 2 miles from Oro Valley and features Breakers Bay, the largest wave pool in Arizona, a plethora of slides and a specially designed kid’s area to entertain smaller children with both wet and dry activities.
