Peoria is a city in Maricopa and Yavapai counties in Arizona. It is located within the major suburb of Phoenix just north of Tempe and west of Scottsdale. Peoria is positioned on gently sloping desert terrain in the Salt River Valley, and extends into the foothills of the mountains to the north. Its name is a corruption of the Illini word for “prairie fire.”

A major fire in July 1917 almost wiped out the entire business district of Peoria. The damage was so severe it appeared as if the whole town was destroyed. This disaster however had a positive side to it. Because the town’s brick stores were completely ruined, replacement buildings were constructed from newer sturdier materials, lifting the appearance and stability of the community to new heights.

Peoria offers a diverse selection of entertainment and recreation activities. The Peoria Sports Complex containing one main stadium and 12 practice fields, and hosts sporting events and is hired regularly for baseball tournaments, concerts and weddings. It is home to the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners in the spring, where a great number of tourists and holiday makers visit the Complex to watch their favourite professional baseball team training in the Cactus League.

For a cooler activity, Polar Ice is located right next door and is a wonderful family oriented Ice skating arena used for hockey, figure skating and public use. Hockey and figure skating programs are offered as well as food and merchandise being on hand. Polar Ice provides safe and enjoyable ice activities for all ages.

Outdoor recreation can be enjoyed at nearby Lake Pleasant where the community comes together to enjoy water skiing, boating, tubing, sunbathing, camping, barbecues and family events. The park is open year round and is framed by superior views of the desert with the sparkling lake in between.
