Safford is a city in Graham County, Arizona. It is located on the south eastern edge of the state. The town is named after Arizona Territorial Governor Anson P.K. Safford
Safford holds a relatively isolated position within the state and therefore has been chosen as a prime spot for hosting observatories. The city does all it can to aid to the quality of images taken by these observatories by reducing local residential and business lighting, even the street lights are low-output. Tours of the Mount Graham International Observatory are run Eastern Arizona College's Discovery Park Campus and feature a trip up scenic Mount Graham, focusing on the mountain's rich geology, history, and diversity of life; a lunch near the summit of the mountain; and a guided tour of the observatory facility.
Safford’s most prominent feature is Mount Graham which lies a few miles southwest of the city. The mountain is home to the Mount Graham International Observatory, Large Binocular Telescope, the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope and the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope. The Mount Graham International Observatory complex is operated by the University of Arizona.
The Black Hills Rockhound Area is a popular location for rockhounders. Camping here is primitive but the sunsets are spectacular and the fire Agate is plentiful and varied.
