Scottsdale is a city in Maricopa County in Arizona. It is located Adjacent to Phoenix and north of Mesa. The Fountain Hills and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community lay to the east.

From 800 AD to 1400 AD Hohokam inhabited this area, farming the land and building irrigation canals. The Hohokam's legacy is their creation of more than 125 miles of canals to provide water for their agricultural needs. These have since been adapted and improved upon and are still in use today.

Renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright set up his "winter camp" at the base of the McDowell Mountains in 1937. Scottsdale has been influenced greatly by Wrights work with many of its existing building being of his design. A Frank Lloyd Wright memorial stands in North Scottsdale today and a major street bears his name.

Scottsdale has been described as "a desert version of Miami's South Beach" and as having "plenty of late night partying and a buzzing hotel scene". Shopping and entertainment is a major draw card for visitors. The Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall is one of the twenty largest malls in the United States and offers high end fashion. South Scottsdale is a dynamic urban area that is becoming the art centre of metropolitan Phoenix and continuously hosts diverse and exhilarating nightlife. The cowboy era is echoed along South Scottsdale’s many streets lined with fashion stores, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and western art galleries.

Downtown Scottsdale is the hub of shopping, studios, museums and galleries. Offered is a diverse collection of styles and genres from the contemporary to the more touristy and western-themed. The very popular Scottsdale Artwalk is held weekly. The galleries in this area display works both from local artists and from around the world.
