Surprise is a city in Maricopa County in Arizona. It is located north west of Phoenix in central part of the state.
The city was founded in 1938 by real estate developer and state legislator Homer C. Ludden. Ludden subdivided the one-mile-square parcel of land to build inexpensive homes for agricultural workers. He named the city Surprise after his hometown in Nebraska. The city became incorporated in 1960 and has since experienced tremendous growth.
Surprise is about five miles northwest of the original Sun City and Sun City West developments which are planned retirement communities. Tens of thousands of retirees moved to Surprise city in the 1990s and early 2000s to be close to the age specific facilities and lifestyle offered.
Each spring the Surprise Stadium is home for two Major League Baseball teams, the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers. In 2005 the city hosted a Golden Baseball League team, and is the home city for the Surprise Rafters, a team in the Arizona Fall League.
Surprise is also the residence of the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex (STRC) which opened in 2007 and since received numerous awards, the most prestigious being the USTA naming it the 2008 Outstanding Facility of the year. An assortment of professional events are held here each year, including the Outback Champion Series tour, a USTA Pro Circuit event, and many USTA regional and sectional events.
