Tempe is a city in Maricopa County in Arizona. It is located just east of Phoenix and in close proximity to several major cities such as Glendale, Chandler and Scottsdale, all within the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.

Tempe is the location of Arizona State University's oldest and largest campus. It lies in the heart of the city about eight miles east of downtown Phoenix. This urban campus is 642 acres in size and is completely encompassed by an arboretum. The Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is on site along with several other notable landmarks such as the Charles Trumbull Hayden Library, the University Club Building, University Bridge and Palm Walk, which is lined by 111 palm trees.

Shopping is a great attraction in Tempe with the city boasting the fact that it is home to IKEA’s first Arizona branch. Two popular shopping destinations are Arizona Mills, one of the state’s largest shopping malls situated near the border and Tempe Marketplace, a large open air mall featuring live music, water and laser shows which is located just southeast of Tempe Town Lake. In recent years the city has been transformed by the completion of the Tempe Town Lake and commercial and high-rise development along the reservoir, thus making the Mill Avenue area a popular shopping and entertainment site for business people and students.

One of Tempe’s more popular festivals is Hoodstock. This block party is held annually behind Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic parish and at any given time there is a crowd of at least two hundred people. Moira Hyde first begun this celebration in 2004 and today its main attraction is the live music from a variety of local artists. Other highlights include a bike parade, sidewalk art, lip sync, and a dessert contest.
