Batesville is the largest city in and the county seat of Independence County in Arkansas. It is located on the White River in the north east part of the state just 80 miles northeast of the state capital Little Rock. It was named after James Woodson Bates who settled in the town and was the first territorial delegate from Arkansas to the Congress of the United States.

Historically, Batesville was a significant port on the White River and served as an entry point to the interior of northern Arkansas. Batesville played a large role in the settling of the Ozark Mountains region and today is one of the host cities for many Ozrak Mountain tourist events. It is also a regional manufacturing and distribution hub for the Ozark Mountain region and northeast Arkansas.

Festivals, nature tours, music and outdoor recreation draw thousands of visitors each year to the mountains for relaxation and recreation. Birding, fishing, canoeing and golf are all on show amongst some of America’s most beautiful scenery.

The Old Independence Regional Museum was constructed by the WPA in 1936 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, fully restored, it is a popular museum, preserving and presenting the history of the 12 counties that were part of Independence County in 1820. History buffs will enjoy the early documents and photographs displayed in the research library whilst the whole family can learn from the many interpretive exhibits.
