Hot Springs the county seat of Garland County and the principal city of the Hot Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area, encompassing all of Garland County. It is located at the junction of Interstates 70 and 270 in the central east part of the state.
The city is named for the natural thermal water that flows from 47 springs on the western slope of Hot Springs Mountain down into the central city. These famous spring make Hot Springs a popular tourist destination and a very successful spa town. About a million gallons of 143-degree Fahrenheit water flow from the springs each day. These natural thermal waters are federally-protected and are used for thermal bathing at several hotels and a hospital within the city. The water is available free for drinking at several fountains in the downtown area.
Hot Springs Creek is a smaller spring that runs underground from an area near Park Avenue to Bath House Row. Bathhouse Row is an area consisting of eight turn-of-the century historic building, managed by the Service. Tourists can experience a firsthand glimpse into the fascinating past of the city by walking through and around these beautifully preserved structures. The Buckstaff and the Quapaw are two bathhouses which reopened in 2008 and still remain in operation. The Fordyce bathhouse has since been converted into a museum.
The city host several annual events and attractions including an outdoor skating rink November through January, Hot Springs Jazz Festival, Hot Springs Blues Festival, Big Barbecue Cook offs, the downtown Bathtub Races held each spring and the World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade held each March.
