Van Buren is the second largest city in the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area and the county seat of Crawford County in Arkansas. It is located directly northeast of Fort Smith at the Interstate 40 - Interstate 540 junction, close to the Arkansas Oklahoma border.
The Van Buren area was settled in 1818 and in 1819 became a territory. A lumber yard was constructed to serve as a fuel depot for river traffic, making Van Buren a notable community. In 1831 the town’s first post office was constructed for the community and was named after Martin Van Buren, an appointed Secretary of State, and the area has held the same name since.
On April 21, 1996 a category F3 tornado hit the Fort Smith/Van Buren area causing extensive damage. The tornado killed 2, injured 89 and cost $300 million in damage. At its worst, the tornado was one half of one mile across. Fortunately Van Buren's beautifully restored Main Street Historic District was spared and has become increasingly treasured by its residents.
The old downtown historic area has a Victorian-style performance hall from the late 1800s called the King Opera House. It has graced Main Street for well over a hundred years and continues today to set the stage with its vibrant theatrical offerings.
A popular tourist attraction is the Van Buren Tour. The golden age of travel can be relived travelling by train through the mountains and valleys of Northwest Arkansas. Today the city offers a variety of sights to see, shops to explore and friendly people to meet.
