Fontana is a city in San Bernardino County in the state of California. It is located approximately 60 miles from the coastline in the southern part of the state. Numerous major cities are situated close by allowing residents and visitors a plethora of outdoor recreation, tourist attractions and landmarks all easily within their reach.
Historically Fontana was an agricultural town of citrus orchards, vineyards and chicken ranches. Henry J. Kaiser built the only steel mill west of the Mississippi River just outside the city during World War II which resulted in radically transforming the area.
Fontana has a strong drag-racing heritage which boomed in the 1950s and 1060s. Mickey Thompson’s Fontana International Dragway was also referred to as Fontana Drag City or Fontana Drag Strip and although the original Fontana strip is no longer in use, a new NHRA-sanctioned drag strip opened in 2006 to claim back Fontana’s drag-racing reputation.
Today the city is a regional hub of the trucking industry. Interstate 10, State Route 210 and Interstate 15 pass through the city, bringing with them tourists, trade and revenue. The city is home to several truck dealerships, industrial equipment sales centres and product distribution centres for such companies as Toyota, Target, Sears, Mercedes-Benz, Southern California Edison, Home Shopping Network, and Avery Dennison.
Fontana is home to the largest of the San Bernardino County system libraries and also hosts the Fontana Days Half Marathon and 5K runs. This race is on record as the fastest half-marathon course in the world. Other attractions include a renovated historic theatre, a municipal park, and the Auto Club Speedway on the site of the Kaiser Steel Mill.
