Historically Modesto was a stop on the railroad connecting Sacramento to Los Angeles. It was founded in 1870 and was to be named for William C. Ralston, financier of many projects in early California. Folklore claims that he declined the suggestion and a Spanish-speaking railroad worker at the naming ceremony said that Ralston was "Muy modesto" meaning very modest.
Today the city is surrounded by fertile farmland helping the county’s ranking as the 6th in all California counties for farm production including milk, almonds, chickens, cattle, and walnuts. Affordable housing and accessible location is creating a fast growing population and an increasing bedroom community for commuters to Sacramento, Fresno, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Modesto is known for several historical sites. The 1880’s hand built McHenry Mansion sits across from the McHenry Museum and offers tours and displays regarding Modesto’s history. The Gallo Centre for the Arts aims to enrich the quality of life in the Central Valley by providing an inspirational civic gathering place where regional, national and international cultural activities illuminate, educate and entertain. It plays host to international and regional arts and is located in Modesto’s downtown. George Lucas Plaza American Graffiti inspired bronze statue made in the honour of Modesto filmmaker George Lucas is located at Five Points and remains a popular photo spot for visitors.
The city’s largest entertainment and cultural gathering is the Xclamation Festival. An estimated 16,000 attendees in 2009 enjoyed music and food on the streets of downtown Modesto. Other key features of the city include the critically acclaimed Gallo Centre for the Arts, Prospect Theatre Project, the Modesto Nuts and the Amgen Tour of California.
