Alamosa is a Home Rule Municipality and the county seat of Alamosa County in Colorado. It is located in central west America and is surrounded by rugged mountain peaks. The city takes its name from the Alamosa River with "Alamosa" being a Spanish adjective meaning "of cottonwood”.

Alamosa was established in1878 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and quickly became an important rail center. Today the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad provides excursion trains from Alamosa to La Veta and a connection to the Cumbres and Toltec Railway. The tours flaunt breathtaking country side unseen from the highway.

Alamosa is the state’s most populous city and a hub for the San Luis Valley area providing customers with goods and services. The San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center is located here along with a Wal-Mart, Safeway, Supercenter and a variety of smaller retailers and eateries. This notable tourist town boasts many nearby attractions including the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve which is located only ½ hour from Alamosa. With soaring peaks, wetlands, tundra, and the tallest sand dunes in North America this unique and diverse park is not to be missed.

Winter Recreation in the San Luis Valley is picturesque with blue skies, deep powder and remarkable surrounding mountains. Two major downhill ski and snowboard areas and miles of backcountry skiing provide snow sport opportunities for all. Summer brings indoor swimming and sunny days on the City owned Cattails Golf Course.
