The City of Aspen is an affluent Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous city of Pitkin County in the state of Colorado. It is located along the southeast end of the Roaring Fork Valley, along the Roaring Fork River. Red Mountain sits to the north, Smuggler Mountain to the east, and Aspen Mountain to the south. Aspen was originally founded as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom and was named for the abundance of aspen trees in the area.

In the late 20th century the city developed into a ski resort and upscale tourist center. The Aspen Parks Department maintains one of the largest free cross-country trail systems in the United States. The Nordic trails system consists of 100 kilometers of groomed ski and snowshoe trails stretching from Aspen to Snowmass, including both the Aspen Golf and Tennis Club and Snowmass Golf Club.

Aspen is known today as a glitzy playground of the wealthy and famous and draws a variety of celebrities. Aspen has become a second and third home to many international jet setters. The downtown area is an upscale shopping district boasting Ralph Lauren, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Fendi, Bvlgari, Burberry, Brioni, Theory and Ermenegildo Zegna boutiques. Fine dining, dancing and glamorous entertainment embellish Aspen’s nights.

Attractions in and around the area include the Ashcroft ghost town, rock climbing, Jeep Tours, hiking tours, trout fishing, hot air ballooning, skiing, golfing, river rafting and the historic town of Redstone and its famous Redstone Castle, both of which are in the Crystal River Valley.
