Aurora is a Home Rule Municipality spanning Arapahoe, Adams, and Douglas counties in the state of Colorado. Aurora is the third most populous city in the state of Colorado and occupies most of the south-east suburbs of the metropolitan area of which Denver is the core.

A large military presence has existed in Aurora since the early 20th century. In 1918, Army General Hospital #21 opened, with an expansion and upgrade in 1941 just in time to care for the wounded servicemen of World War II. In 1938 The Lowry Air Force Base was opened straddling the border of Aurora and Denver.

Aurora hosts more than 30 regional and national sports tournaments each year permitting the nickname of Colorado’s “Sportstown”. The city is proud of its superior involvement in facilitating and enhancing sports and a variety of professional American Athletes hail from this city. The city of Aurora manages more than 1,800 acres of developed park land, more than 6,000 acres of open space and natural areas, and seven award-winning municipal golf courses. The Aurora Sports Park which opened in 2003 covers 220-acres.

Aurora has more than twenty historic sites, managed by the city, including the Aurora Fox Arts Centre, a 245-seat performing arts facility in Aurora's East End Arts District. Other historic sites of interest are the Gully Homestead of 1870, the Victorian-style Centennial House of 1890, the Art Deco-style KOA Building of 1934, the Delaney Round Barn of 1902, and the Lowry Building 800.

To remember and preserve not only Auroras History but also its future, the city is home to a number of educational facilities. The Aurora History Museum looks at the area’s history as well as displaying ongoing decorative arts. The Plains Conservation Center is an outdoor natural area aimed at preserving Colorado's prairies, educating children about Colorado's eco-history, and nurturing conservation efforts. The land is bisected by West Bijou Creek with 1,100 acres in Aurora and 7,960 acres south of Strasburg.
