Canon City is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous city of Fremont County in the state of Colorado. It straddles the Arkansas River and is the gateway to Royal Gorge, a popular tourist destination for sightseeing, white water rafting, and rock climbing.

The Royal Gorge is a 10-mile-long canyon on the Arkansas River with a width of 50 feet at its base and a few hundred feet at its top, and with a depth of up to 1,250 feet making it one of the deepest canyons in Colorado. In 1929 Cañon City authorized the building of the Royal Gorge Bridge, which at 1,053 feet above the river is the highest suspension bridge over water in the world. The bridge forms the kernel of Royal Gorge Park, a theme park owned and run by the city. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad runs trains trips through the Royal Gorge throughout the year in which the train travels 12-miles through the canyon from Canon City, Colorado to Parkdale and returns.

Canon City is known for being the location of nine state and four Federal prisons and penitentiaries. The Museum of Colorado Prisons is an interesting place to visit. Each cell holds a different exhibit and an informative audio tour guides you through the history of the prison.

The world's most complete Stegosaurus fossil is on display at The Dinosaur Depot Museum along with a multitude of fossils and the rock in which they are found. Visitors can view exhibits and watch volunteers prepare fossils for study in the laboratory complex. The Garden Park Fossil Area is open to visitors and is where many dinosaurs have been excavated over the last 125 years.
