Colorado Springs is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and most populous city of El Paso County in the state of Colorado. It is located the base of the Rocky Mountains on Fountain Creek and is just east of the geographic center of the state. The city sits over one mile above sea level, though some areas of the city are significantly higher. It is the second most populous city in the state of Colorado, and the largest city by area.
Colorado Springs was founded in 1871 by General William Palmer. It was created with the intention being a high-quality resort community, and was soon nicknamed "Little London" because of the many English tourists who came. Palmer founded the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and through this and many other minor ventures developed Colorado Springs into one of the most popular travel destinations in the late 1800s.
Colorado Springs is home to two major Air Force Bases. Peterson Air Force Base carries out missile defence operations and development. It is currently the headquarters of the majority of Air Force Space Command and the operations of Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Strategic Command. Schriever Air Force Base is home to the 50th Space Wing, which controls warning, navigational, communications and spy satellites. It is also the home of the Space Warfare Center and the home for the 576th Flight Test Squadron. It is the location of the Global Positioning System master control station and GPS Operations Center and the US Naval Observatory Alternate Master Clock, used to synchronize GPS satellite time.
Colorado Springs is home to the United States Olympic Training Center and the headquarters of the United States Olympic Committee. Several of United States national federations for individual Olympic sports have their headquarters in Colorado Springs. These include USA Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, USA Fencing Association, USA Figure Skating Association, USA Basketball, USA Boxing and USA Cycling. The city has hosted the U.S. Figure Skating Championships 6 times and the World Figure Skating Championships 5 times and is home to the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame. The Broadmoor Skating Club, a notable training center, is also situated here.
Colorado Springs is a popular destination for tourists seeking scenery, rock formations and other unique geological features, like Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods park, Seven Falls, and Cave Of The Winds. Garden of the Gods Park is a registered National Natural Landmark featuring dramatic views, 300 foot towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak. This world class Visitor & Nature Center is the most visited attraction and prides itself upon having one of Colorado's most photographed views.
