Durango is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous city of La Plata County in the state of Colorado. It is located in the Animas River Valley surrounded by the San Juan Mountains. The town was organized in September 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to serve the San Juan mining district and is named after Durango, Mexico, which was named after Durango, Spain. The word Durango originates from the Basque word "Urango" meaning "water town".

The Animas River—El Río de las Animas—runs through downtown and boasts gold medal fly fishing waters. It is a popular spot for hiking, mountain biking, road biking, backpacking, rock climbing, hunting, off-roading, year-round fishing, white-water rafting, kayaking and golfing.

An endless variety of year round activities and world-class experiences for the entire family can be found in and around Durango. The breathtaking canyons of the San Juan National Forest can be seen aboard the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This heritage railway travels from Durango to the historic mining town of Silverton on steam-powered trains with rolling stock dating back to the 1920s. The city is near five major ski areas and is located only thirty-five miles east of Mesa Verde National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage known for its Ancestral Puebloan Cliff Dwellings. Walking tours of downtown Durango explore eclectic shops and art galleries, clothing boutiques, restaurants, newsstands, tourist and gift shops and restaurants serving specialty foods including Mexican, Italian, French, Thai and Japanese.

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year Agritourism is thriving in Durango and visitors are welcome to participate in activities, events and services on both farms and ranches covering subjects such as animal and crop care, handicrafts, entertainment, natural resources and culinary experiences. Durango is also home to the Snowdown Festival and the annual Music in the Mountains summer festival.
