Eagle County is a county in the state of Colorado. It is located in the north-west part of the state approximately 126 miles from Denver. Interstate 70 crosses the county from east to west. The county seat is the Town of Eagle and along with the state is named after the Eagle River. The Eagle River rises in the south-eastern part of the county, receives Gore Creek at Dowds Junction, and joins the Colorado River in the west. Fryingpan River and the Roaring Fork River intersect the southwest corner of the county. A large percent of the area is taken up by White River National Forest, and much of the rest is managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

The Ute Indians claimed Eagle County for summer hunting and fishing grounds long before Europeans explored the area. Kit Carson guided the Fremont party through the region in 1840 forming the first European presence. Lead carbonate ore was found in Leadville in 1874 and a permanent camp was established within 5 years. This settlement became the town of Red Cliff and was named for the surrounding red quartzite cliffs. Eagle County was created by the Colorado legislature in 1883 from portions of Summit County. Cliff Red became the first county seat, until in 1921 when it was moved to Eagle.

Eagle County offers spectacular landscape, wholesome heritage, modern amenities, raging rivers and beautiful lakes. A peaceful place to live and a rewarding place to visit.
