Highlands Ranch is a census-designated place in Douglas County in the state of Colorado. It is one of the most populous unincorporated communities in the United States and is located about 12 miles south of the state capital Denver.

The area was originally a prime hunting area for the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho Indians. The Colorado Gold Rush brought people in droves during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As Denver flourished, so did its surrounding smaller settlements. Small businesses began and schools were established making the town a thriving entity of its own. Today Highlands Ranch is often referred to as a "bedroom community" of Denver. Being so close to the capital and several other prosperous cities has allowed residents and visitors to access a plethora of modern facilities and recreational activities.

The Highlands Ranch Metro District supports is active residents with an impressive network of outdoor recreation amenities including 23 parks, more than 70 miles of trails and 2,200 acres of natural open space areas. Two skate parks, an outdoor inline hockey rink, four dog off-leash areas, eight lighted public tennis courts, three lighted ball fields, an historic park and three community gardens bring family and friends of Highland Park together to enjoy quality recreational facilities.

The Backcountry Wilderness Area is an exciting place to hike and view nature. Spread across 8,200 acres of open space owned and managed by the HRCA, the Backcountry is home to a wide variety of wildlife, native plants, and birds. 11 miles of private and 12 miles of public trails allow hikers superb access to nature at its finest.

The HRCA offers youth and educational centring on outdoor opportunities nature. Wildlife often viewed includes elk, deer, eagles, coyotes, and the occasional bear and mountain lion. Ponderosa pine forests, dense oak thickets, mountain mahogany, beautiful wildflowers and an incredible variety of birds are found throughout. The Wilderness Adventure Camp takes youths outdoors to hike daily and participate in nature lessons focusing on wildlife, plants, habitat, conservation, animal tracks, and survival and predator-prey relationships.
