Pagosa Springs is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat of Archuleta County in the state of Colorado. It is located in the upper San Juan Basin, surrounded by the 3 million acre San Juan National Forest, adjacent to the largest wilderness area in the state of Colorado, the Weminuche Wilderness. Approximately 65 percent of county land is either San Juan National Forest or Southern Ute Indian land. The town is located approximately 35 miles north of the New Mexico border on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide at 7,000 feet above sea level.

The town was named after one of the largest and hottest natural springs in the world. The Hot Springs are celebrated for their therapeutic powers and visitors from all over the world come to soak in its hot baths. The "strong smell" of the Great Pagosa Hot Springs derives from its remarkably high mineral content which many believe gives the water its naturally therapeutic value.

The high desert plateau and dramatic Rocky Mountains creates an unusually mild climate in Pagosa Springs. Around 300 days of sun hit the town each year. In contrast to this, the Wolf Creek Ski Area which is located between Pagosa Springs and South Fork, receives more average annual snowfall than any other resort in Colorado, at about 465 inches per year.

The Pagosa Springs area has year round recreational activities including downhill and cross country skiing at nearby Wolf Creek ski area and snowmobiling in the forest service land. The warmer months fishing, hiking, and rafting and hunters visit in the autumn to harvest elk, deer and other game animals.

The Busted Spur Rodeo is held in June and July and entertains crowds with Bull Riding, Steer Riding, Wooly Riding, Calf Riding, Junior Barrels, Senior Barrels, and Open Breakaway Roping & Team Roping. Along with entertainment and activities the rodeo provides festive food and refreshments.

Other attractions in the area include Indian Ruins, Chimney Rock, Mesa Verde, Hovenweep and Canyons of the Ancients.
