Pueblo is a Home Rule Municipality and the county seat of populous city of Pueblo County in the state of Colorado. It is located confluence of the Arkansas River and Fountain Creek 103 miles south of the state capitol Denver. The Intersection at U.S. Highway 50 and Interstate 25 sits in Pueblo, possibly making it the second most important intersection in the state.
The Colorado Gold Rush of 1859 drew prospectors to the area and four small towns were created: Pueblo (incorporated in 1870), South Pueblo (incorporated in 1873), Central Pueblo (incorporated in 1882), and Bessemer (incorporated in 1886). Pueblo as we see it today is a collaboration of these. The Great Flood of 1921 was a major natural disaster and momentous setback in the city's history . Thousands of lives were lost and the cost of damage to the city was in the millions. The people of Pueblo rallied together and spent years trying to recreate what had been lost. The city that had relied on steel production as its principal industry through most of the 20th century, now makes a concerted effort to diversify its economic base. The modern day industrial park and revitalized downtown area is now home to a number of electronics and aviation companies.
