Ansonia is a city in New Haven County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 8 miles west of New Haven and 63 miles north-east of New York, New York. The city is part of the New Haven - Meriden metropolitan statistical area. Ansonia sits immediately north of Derby and is bisected by the Naugatuck River.

The community was named Ansonia in honour of Anson Greene Phelps, a local merchant and philanthropist. Initially, the city was chartered as the borough of Derby. It became a separate town in 1889, and finally incorporated in 1893.

The people of Ansonia are known for their devotion to their high school football team, the Ansonia Chargers. The Naugatuck Greyhounds, from nearby Naugatuck high school, and the Chargers are arch-rivals. The annual Ansonia-Naugatuck game is one of the most important events of the year for the two cities and the fan base and celebrations spread city wide.

Ansonia and nearby attractions include the Peabody Museum of natural History, Connecticut Children’s Museum, Quillinan Reservoir, Beardsley Zoological Gardens, Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center and the Weir Farm National Historic Site, which was once the summer retreat of American painter J. Alden Weir. The Ansonia Nature Center on Hilltop preserves open fields and woodlands, has a fantastic wooden structure playground and is a favourite for school trips.

Ansonia, Derby, Shelton, Seymour, and Beacon Falls form one of the most important industrial communities in the state. Heavy machinery, electric supplies, brass and copper products and silk goods and manufactured in Ansonia. The world headquarters of the Farrel Corporation, a leading producer of plastics and rubber processing equipment, has facilities along the banks of the Naugatuck River in the center of the city. Ansonia Copper & Brass, which supplies metal rod, wire and tube products to manufacturers of finished commercial products, also makes its home in the city. As well as these two industrial units, the major landmarks in the city include the public library, National Guard Armory and the Ansonia Opera House.
