Avon is a town in the Farmington Valley region of Hartford County in the state of Connecticut. Avon is a suburb of Hartford located 5 miles north-west of West Hartford and 95 miles north-east of New York, New York. The town is situated inside the Hartford metropolitan area.

Avon was originally a part of Farmington and was known as Northington. In 1830 the area was sold to Puritans who broke off from Farmington, and established their own separate town called Avon. According to the Avon Historical Society, Avon's independence was rooted in the need for a church that was more accessible to the growing town's population than the Congregational Church in Farmington. They named it after the Avon River in England. The town of Avon was officially incorporated in 1830.

The Talcott Mountain, part of the Metacomet Ridge, are a mountainous trap-rock ridgeline that stretches from Long Island Sound to near the Vermont border and flanks the east side of Avon. A 51-mile Metacomet Trail traverses the Talcott Mountain ridge and is a popular outdoor recreation resource notable for its towering western cliff faces.

Avon has several beautiful outdoor recreational areas that prove to be very popular with hikers, skiers and campers. Alsop Meadows is a natural area consisting of woods and open meadows. Winter attracts cross country skiers whilst walkers, hikers, joggers, canoeists and campers use the facilities in the warmer months. Buckingham Road Recreation Area has two all-purpose playing fields, one full-sized regulation baseball field and a fully accessible children’s playground, all of which spread across almost 18 acres. The Countryside Park has two ponds and a building that hosts recreation classes, non-profit public meetings and functions and is available for rental by private groups. The park covers 17.5 acres and is open year round.

Other attractions in and around Avon include the Avon Museum, Farmington Valley Art Center, Richard W Dunne Library, Secret Lake, Fisher Meadows Recreation Area and the Bell Compo Golf Course.
