Branford is a city in New Haven County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 6 miles east of New Haven and 71 miles north-east of New York, New York. Branford is a shoreline town on the Long Island Sound and is included in the New Haven - Meriden metropolitan area.

Branford borders East Haven to the west and is dominated by Lake Saltonstall and Saltonstall Mountain. The Mountain is part of the Metacomet Ridge which stretches from Long Island Sound to nearly the Vermont border. The city has two harbours, the central Branford Harbour and Stony Creek Harbour, and includes the Thimble Islands.

Branford made its first notable appearance on the American map during the mid-19th century where it became a popular resort area. Around twenty hotels opened and offered cliental modern recreational and relaxation facilities. Included in these businesses were the Indian Point House in Stony Creek, Montowese House in Indian Neck, and Sheldon House in Pine Orchard. Branford’s resort image lasted through to the mid-20th century, at which time the area took on many characteristics typically associated with north-eastern suburbs.

Today Branford is a city bustling with entertainment and recreational opportunities. Several town-maintained parks and beaches provide hiking trails and 20 miles of coastline with more than 12 marinas offer water based activities such as swimming, fishing and sailing. Cruises of the Thimble Islands depart from the Stony Creek dock, and seal-watch cruises take place each March. Other attractions in and around Branford include Harrison House, Connecticut Trolley Museum, Saltonstall Lake, Twin Lakes Golf Course, Connecticut State Boat Launching Area and Hotchkiss Grove Beach. More than 20 historic homes offer insight to the areas beginnings. Harrison House and Museum is a 1724 structure which has period furnishings, local historical items, archives, a barn and a traditional herb garden.

Branford Center is home to many small stores, restaurants, and coffee houses, which line Main Street, with the Green at the center. Churches, the town hall and other government facilities are found here as are temporary annual concerts and other events, like the annual Branford Festival.
