Bridgeport is a city in Fairfield County in the state of Connecticut. It is located in the southwest corner of Connecticut where the Pequonnock River empties into Long Island Sound.

Bridgeport's economy began in fishing and farming due to the city’s location on the deep Newfield Harbour. Shipbuilding and whaling boomed in the mid-19th century until rapid industrialisation in the late-19th century transformed the city into a manufacturing center. Production included brass fittings, carriages, sewing machines, brassieres, saddles, ammunition and the famous Bridgeport milling machine. The 2000's see Bridgeport transitioning into a service economy providing affordable housing and a high quality of lifestyle.

Today Bridgeport is nick named the “Park City”. More than 27 parks dominate the city. Beardsley, being one of the largest, is in the north-eastern part of the city and contains winding roads and paths through woodlands, a golf course and Connecticut's only zoo, the Beardsley Zoo. Seaside Park covers 210 acres and lies along the shoreline. These two major parks were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed Central Park in New York City.

Bridgeport is known for being the residence of the famous circus-promoter and once mayor P.T. Barnum. Barnum built three houses in the city, and housed his circus in town during winters. The Barnum Festival is a series of dozens of events such as dances, food fares, galas, concerts, and sports competitions.

Bridgeport has a number of diverse educational attractions. The Black Rock Art Center is a multi-cultural center that presents performing artists from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Americas. The Discovery Museum and Planetarium emphasizes exhibits on science, with the state's only Challenger Center, affiliated with the national space program. The Housatonic Museum of Art is located at Housatonic Community College and houses the largest collection of art of any two-year college in the nation. More than 50 registered Historic Places and rich diverse architecture fills this pedestrian friendly city.
