Colchester is a town in New London County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 17 miles south-east of Manchester and 84 miles SW of Boston. The town is part of the New London- Norwich metropolitan statistical area.
Colchester was established in 1698 on land bought by Nathaniel Foote from Native Americans who originally lived here. Colchester was named after the town in England from where Foote’s grandfather had emigrated. Colchester's early history was centred on the church parish. Simple beginnings brought self sufficient residents and within a few years, several grist mills and saw mills were built to provide grain and lumber. Early industries in the area include iron works, clothier shops, potash works and brick kilns. By the 19th Century three tanneries and a woollen mill, a hatter, a wheel and carriage factory, a paper mill, a creamery and a canning company were operational.
An improved highway system in the post-war era led to a new era for Colchester. A new generation of suburban dwellers found Colchester to be an excellent "bedroom" community for Hartford, Middletown and the Norwich/New London areas. During the 1950’s, people would pass through Colchester on their way to the beach and would visit iconic stops including Harry's, the Colchester Bakery and Levine's Coat Shop.
Today, over 300 years after the settling of Colchester, the population has grown to over 14,000.The town is one of the fastest growing towns in Connecticut and its center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district, known as the Colchester Village Historic District.
Salmon River State Forest includes sports fields, fishing, hiking, hunting, mountain biking trails and picnic areas. This beautiful park features Comstock's Bridge. This bridge spans the Salmon River near Route 16 in East Hampton and is the only remaining covered bridge in eastern Connecticut. The first sawmill in Marlborough, built in 1751, sits on the Blackledge River as does a handicap accessible fly fishing area and a disabled veterans fishing area.
Other attractions in Colchester include Chanticlair Golf Course, Amston Lake, Devil’s Hopyard State Park and Lake Hayward. The annual Colchester 57 Fest is held in September and features many entertainment activities, fireworks and food.
