Danbury is a city in northern Fairfield County the state of Connecticut. It is located in the western part of the state, about 35 miles west of New Haven and 60 miles southwest of the state capital of Hartford. Danbury is also about 70 miles northeast of New York City. The first colonists settled in the area in the late 17th century and chose the name Danbury for their English city of origin, Danbury, Essex.

Danbury is nicknamed Hat City because it used to be a center of the hat industry. In the late 18th century Danbury developed a booming hat industry producing more hats than anywhere else in the United States. By the time of Danbury's incorporation in 1889, the city's hat output was numbering in the millions annually. Although the industry has declined dramatically through the 20th century, its influence is still felt in Danbury today. The city seal and many of the city's exhibits and attractions still depict the traditional derby hat.

Candlewood Lake is the largest lake in Connecticut. The lake was artificially created in 1929 where Wood Creek and the Rocky River meet near the Housatonic River. The lake is operated as a hydroelectric power facility by the Connecticut Light and Power Company.

The Danbury Railway Museum chronicles the history of railroading, offers rail excursion trips, and houses a collection of items including original and restored railroad artefacts. New England's past is chronicled through numerous displays and exhibits with a principal focus on the heritage of Danbury. Other Museums include the Danbury Museum and Historical Society and the Military Museum of Southern New England .
