Glastonbury is a town in Hartford County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 5 miles south-east of Hartford and 91 miles south-west of Boston, Massachusetts on the banks of the Connecticut River. The town center is defined as a census-designated place and benefits from easy access to the nearby cities and towns.
Glastonbury was a shipbuilding town on the banks of the Connecticut River during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The shipyards’ needs were filled by sawmills, charcoal kilns, and foundries. The early industrial era replaced shipbuilding and the J.B. Williams Soap Factory opened in 1840 in James B. Williams’ drugstore in Manchester. His business moved to Glastonbury shortly after where he formed with his brother what is believed to be the first commercial soap manufacturing business in the world. During the World Wars, Glastonbury factories supplied leather and woollen goods to the military of Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, and the United States. In addition, Glastonbury has been home to feldspar mills, cotton mills, paper mills, a maker of silver plate, and a builder of airplanes.
The state’s largest berry farm is Rose’s Berry Farm. Not only can you pick quality strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples and pumpkins, but they grow and sell Christmas trees and farm-made jams and pies. Rose’s Berry Farm is also a lovely spot for a scenic breakfast. At Belltown Hill Orchards you can pick your own apples, peaches, pears, blueberries and raspberries. Season farm baking is also available.
Cycling, golfing, hiking and walking through a number of Glastonbury’s parks is an enjoyable way for residents and visitors to see Glastonbury’s wide open spaces and maintained trails.
The Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce Apple Harvest Festival is the most notable festival each year. Each October, the town unites for three days to celebrate apples with various rides and attractions, including booths from many of the local town businesses and politicians. June brings the Under a Strawberry Moon Festival and the annual Glastonbury Art Walk showcases the works of local artists in businesses all over the town center.
Other attractions in and around Glastonbury include Museum-on-the-Green, Welles-Shipman-Ward House, Diamond Lake, South Glastonbury Historic District, Connecticut Audubon Center and the Minnechaug Golf Course.
