Groton is a city in New London County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 37 miles south-east of Manchester, Connecticut and 87 miles south-west of Boston, Massachusetts. It is part of the surrounding New London - Norwich metropolitan area.

Although the first inhabitants in the area were the Nehantic Indians it was the succeeding Pequots that arrived later which were the first to encounter European settlers. The community of Groton was established as a city when it was separated from New London, and officially incorporated in 1705. Groton was named after a town in England. Today the city is framed by the Thames and Mystic Rivers and is notable for its shores on Long Island Sound.

The General Dynamics branch of the Electric Boat Corporation has been designing and producing submarines for the Navy since 1899. Situated in Groton, the company provides jobs to many people in the region.

The Submarine Force Museum is located on the Thames River in Groton and maintains the world's finest collection of submarine artefacts. The museum traces the development of the "Silent Service" from David Bushnell's Turtle, used in the Revolutionary War, to the Ohio and Virginia class submarines. The museum's collections include more than 33,000 artefacts, 20,000 significant documents and 30,000 photographs. A world-renowned 6,000 volume reference and research library relative to the history of U.S. submarines is open for public research. Walking down the decks of the historic ship Nautilus offers an insight to life as a submariner. The Nautilus made naval history by being the world's first nuclear powered vessel, the first ship to go to the North Pole, and first submarine to journey "20,000 Leagues under the sea." Visitors can walk through the actual spaces where the crew worked, ate and slept.

Fort Griswold sits on the east of the river on Groton Heights. It originally stood commanding the harbour and surrounding countryside with projecting fortifications on two corners and a projection on the east side. A deep trench surrounded the fort on three sides and barracks for 300 men paralleled the innermost wall. The fort remained in good condition with a full magazine until 1781. Today...

Project Oceanology was formed in 1972 by a group of teachers and public school administrators from South-eastern Connecticut who recognized the potential and importance of the marine environment as an education resource. Through the years this non-profit organisation has grown into a full-fledged marine science and environmental education centre offering programs for children, students and the public. About 25,000 people each year experience the lighthouse expeditions, oceanographic research cruises and seal watches.
