Hamden is a town in New Haven County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 72 miles north-east of New York, New York in the New Haven - Meriden metropolitan area.

Hamden was originally settled by Puritans as part of the town of New Haven until 1786 when local residents incorporated the area as a separate town, naming it after the English statesman John Hampden.

Hamden is nicknamed the Land of the Sleeping Giant due to a unique hill formation. It is a suburb of the city of New Haven and home to Quinnipiac University.

Hamden has a long-standing industrial history. Eli Whitney began manufacturing using a cotton gin in New Haven in 1798. Whitney introduced the modern era of mass production with the concept of interchangeable parts whilst making arms for the U.S Government. Today the main roadway through Hamden is named Whitney Avenue in honour of Eli Whitney. On this road sits Whitney's old factory operating now as the Eli Whitney Museum. Whitney also constructed stone houses for his employees which are believed to be the first example of employer-provided homes in U.S. history. The area is still referred to as Whitneyville today.

The Farmington Canal is a popular recreational spot for local residents. It was traditionally used for ships travelling northward from New between 1825 and 1848 until superseded by railroad travel. The canal right-of-way is used now as a popular walking and bicycling trail, passing by some of the well-preserved locks of the canal, as well as some of Hamden's oldest sites.

The Acme Mall Shopping Center, Putnam Place Shopping Center, Caldor Shopping Center, Hamden Mart Shopping Center and Mount Carmel Shopping Center offer a range of entertainment facilities, shopping requirements and eateries. Other attractions in and around Hamden include the Prayer and Deliverance Church, Acme Mall Shopping Centre, Butterworth Brook Reservoir and the Pardee Rose Garden.
