Hartford is the capital city Hartford County in the state of Connecticut. It is located on the Connecticut River, north of the center of the state, 24 miles south of Springfield, Massachusetts. Greater Hartford is also the largest metropolitan area in Connecticut.

Hartford is nicknamed the "Insurance Capital of the World" due to housing many of the world's major insurance company headquarters. The first black mayor elected in New England was Thirman L. Milner in 1981 and the first female African-American mayor of a major American city was Carrie Saxon Perry.

Theodore Wirth was a wealthy industrialist and statesman who willed his estate to the City of Hartford with the stipulations that it be used as a horticultural park and that it be named for his wife, Elizabeth, who had died a few years earlier. Today Elizabeth Park is known throughout the world for its diversity and beauty. 102 acres are enhanced by many garden areas, pathways, greenhouses, lawns, a picnic grove, a pond and a breathtaking rose garden. Citizens unite in the park to relish in Hartford outstanding feature.

Just north of downtown, Riverside Park is a park just north of downtown Hartford. This park is home to the Greater Hartford Jaycees Community Boathouse, a boat launch, nature trails and athletic fields. Visitors can enjoy fishing, volleyball, picnicking, mountain biking and playgrounds in these beautifully maintained spacious grounds. Charter Oak Landing sits to the south of downtown and features a dock for excursion boat service as well as a public boat launch. This is a lovely spot for fishing, river walks and family outings.
