Manchester began as a farming community in the 1670s and named their community after the English city of Manchester. Numerous brooks and rivers made the area an ideal location for lumber, paper, and textile industries.

Manchester was initially incorporated as a part of East Hartford but later as a separate town in 1823. It then grew into an industrial town with the world’s largest silk mill being was established in 1838 by the Cheney family. Manchester became the center of the silk industry in America from the late 19th through the mid-20th Century. The "Cheney Family" historic district showcases mills refurbished as apartments and includes nearby museums. The mills, houses of the owners, and homes of the workers are now included in the Cheney Brothers Historic District, a National Historic Landmark.

Hazel Lutz, art teacher and an extensive traveller collected a variety of artefacts and trinkets that she believed would be of interest to children over several years. Her collection grew from a storage cupboard to the Lutz Children's Museum which was founded n 1953 and named in her honour. Carefully planned activities promote a love of learning and thirst for knowledge and focus on self-discovery and exploration. Real museum artefacts or live animals are integrated into almost every program giving children the opportunity to experience the world first hand.
